Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.
Erchie My Droll Friend Neil Munro 9781290641562 Books
Erchie was a newspaper column from 1902 until 1926 in the Glasgow Evening News. These are 141 short short stories reflecting the many opinions of Erchie, a church beadle and waiter. Some are just reflections on life while others more specifically deal with local and national issues of the time period. What makes Erchie something of a challenge is that it is written in dialect. The editors provide 70 pages of notes to explain to the modern Scottish reader what Erchie is talking about, sometimes to give the meaning of a word or expression and sometimes to note a historical occurence. Flipping between the story and the notes (all in the back of the book) takes away from the reading experience.
This is Erchie from story 37, on the coronation (Edward VII). "I dinna ken onything aboot cakes and ale," said Erchie; "but ye shouldna ca' them doon, for ye'll maybe be glad o' then afore nicht. This is whit they ca' a 'light lunch', but whit huz yins in the tred ca' a fine-froth-and-a-daunder-roond-dinner. . . ."
These stories can make you feel as if you're a visitor in early twentieth century Glasgow. A visitor who has to work at understanding and sometimes feeling every bit a foreigner, but also the time traveler who gets to step into another time and place.
